RAISE A GLASS TO GREEK INDEPENDENCE
Posted by admin | Events, General News | Posted on March 22nd, 2012
March 2012 — To mark the 191st anniversary of Greek independence, Mayor MichaelBloomberg of New York raised a glass of Gerovassiliou Malagousia 2010 at a receptionfor 300 people at Gracie Mansion on March 19. Lovers of red wine quaffed a glassof Biblia Chora Areti Red (Agiorgitiko) 2008. President Barack Obama will mark theoccasion at the White House on Wednesday, March 21.
Mayor Bloomberg, a devoted patron of Greek diners, toasted his neighbor OrthodoxGreek Archbishop Demetrios and praised the exuberant spirit of the Greeks whichcourses through all five boroughs. The celebration culminates on Sunday, March 25,with a parade on Fifth Avenue led by the Mayor.
There can be no more appropriate grape variety than Malagousia to mark the occasion.Indigenous to Greece, it nearly died out during the Ottoman period and was only savedfrom extinction in the 1970’s due to the efforts of intrepid Greek winemaker VangelisGerovassiliou.
The War of Greek Independence took place in 1821, ending 400 years of Ottoman(Muslim) rule. Greeks reacted to Turkish oppression and fought back to protect theirheritage, freedom and religion. On Independence Day every March, the towns andvillages of Greece are thronged with crowds wearing native costumes and enjoyingtraditional music and cuisine.
Today we can taste the pleasures of the world’s oldest wine culture through nativevarieties such as Malagousia, Assyrtiko, Mavrotragano, Agiorgitiko and Limnio, thanksto the Greek freedom fighters who preserved these grapes in remote mountain villagesand revived them after occupation. Salutations!
